CAT scans use special X-ray equipment to produce multiple images, or slices, of pictures inside of the body. The newest generation of CAT scan machines collect multi-slices of data in a single revolution in less than one second. Next, a computer joins them to generate cross-sectional views of the area being studied. The images can be examined on a computer monitor or printed out. Compared to other X-rays, the CAT scan offers more clarity. There can be hundreds of images collected in just a few minutes. CAT scans are much more detailed than conventional x-ray and are excellent sources for evaluating the internal organs, bone and soft tissue.
